FIRST GENERATION
200 Jeremie Dumas (200) of Saint Fort de Cona,
Saintonge, France married Susanne Faure (201)
Children:
300 Jean Dumas, probably born about 1671 at Saint
Fort in Saintonge, France. He was married Jan.24, 1691 at the chruch of La
Patente de Soho (London) to Marguerite (Marie) de Gentillot (301), daughter of
Jean Gentillot and Marguerite (Marie) Faure of St. Foy in Guienne, France.
302 Jerome (Jeremiah) Dumas (302), born about
1681 at St. Fort in Saintonge, France. In 1700 he came to Virginia with the
Huguenot group that settled near Manakintown, Virginia. He married about 1701 to
Unity Smith (303) of New Kent County, Virginia.
304 Jeremie Dumas
Notes:
- No evidence has yet been found that Jeremie Dumas and his wife, Susanne
Faure, ever went to England. Their son, Jean, apparently arrived in England
before 1681 and Jerome may have gone with him or they may have gone later with
the Faures. The passenger list of the ship "Mary and Ann" shows a Jean
Farry (probably Faure) travelling with Jerome (Jeremiah). There is also
mentioned in the passenger list "the widow Faure and 4 infants."
- Jean Dumas and his brother Jeremie of St. Fort, France were in Frankfort
Germany in Sept. 1687 and had been in Lausoane Switzerland in Aug. 1687.
- Check was made of the records in St. Fort Sur Gironde without finding any
reference to Jeremie Dumas or Jerome Dumas. There is a suggestion in "The
Huguenots" that the Dumas came from Rousillon.
- The House of Grasse had some marriages with Dumas. There was a Jerome
Dumas listed on one chart but not the one for which we are searching.
- We can assume that Jerome and Jean Dumas probably had many sisters and
brothers if Jeremie and Susanne had the average sized French family of that
period.
